Gabrielle (Gaby) Bernal
Gabrielle (Gaby) Bernal is a former special education teacher from Watsonville, California. As a doctoral candidate in Educational Studies in the teaching and teacher education concentration, she incorporates her lived experience as a teacher educator, advocate, and community member with experience teaching grades 2nd through 10th. Her work is rooted in community to foster understanding and coalition building for educational and social justice. By focusing on mathematics education, teaching practices, and classroom spaces, she not only seeks to disrupt the status quo of over-representation of Black and Brown Students in special education, but she remains committed to celebrating the love, joy, and excitement with and of Black and Brown Children. By exploring formal and informal mathematics settings, uplifting students’ voices, she centers the theorizing and curiosity of Children of Color and their communities while supporting teachers in the community.
